How batteries balance the grid

Grid-scale batteries are Great Britain's fastest-growing power technology - what the ~180 battery sites actually do, why speed matters more than size, and the honest accounting quirks.

The fastest-growing technology on the GB grid doesn’t generate anything. Grid-scale batteries - around 180 sites and counting - make their living by being quick: absorbing power when the grid has too much and returning it when it has too little, sometimes within the same hour.

What they actually do

Frequency response is the classic battery job. The grid must hold 50 Hz, and batteries can move from standby to full power in under a second - faster than any spinning machine. A battery can earn money simply by standing ready to catch the grid when a generator trips.

Energy arbitrage is the growing one: charge through windy, cheap hours (sometimes at negative prices - being paid to charge) and discharge into the evening peak. As wind grows, so does the spread between the grid’s feast hours and famine hours - the greenest-time signal is, in effect, the same signal batteries trade.

Congestion relief is next: batteries placed at transmission bottlenecks soak up power that would otherwise be curtailed and release it when the wires clear.

Batteries are half of GB’s storage story. The other half is far older: pumped storage hydro - four large Welsh and Scottish plants that hold gigawatt-hours where batteries hold gigawatt-minutes. Batteries win on speed and siting; pumped hydro wins on sheer duration.

The honest accounting quirks

Two things about batteries in this site’s data deserve plain labelling:

  • Batteries don’t add energy - they move it (and lose ~10-15% round-trip). A battery megawatt is not a generation megawatt, which is one reason storage is its own fleet category here rather than a fuel.
  • The live mix has no storage slice. In the upstream national data, battery discharge is folded into the “other” category, so the dashboard mix can’t show it separately without double-counting. The storage fleet pages are real; the missing slice is an upstream accounting artefact, honestly noted wherever it appears.
